After SMAC factory, Mezaaj and WifiGen, another Plan9 startup has raised funds from international investor. SportSkot which was incubated in Plan9 incubation cycle has seed funding £90,000 from UK-based investor, Waqas. The main focus of SportSkot startup is to remove the gaps between Pakistan’s sports industry in Sialkot and online market of the sporting goods.
Sialkot is quite popular for its hand-made sport items. Many sport items including bats, balls, footballs and tennis balls etc. are made in Sialkot. The official match ball for FIFA 14 World Cup was also made in Sialkot. Sialkot provides 50-60% of total footballs made. This is quite a distinction for the city and its residents. However, due to lack of Govt. support, the sports industry in Sialkot is unable to reach its maximum potential. SportSkot startup acts as a platform for Sialkot sports items to international buyers through local sports SMEs. It helps in getting international clients along with developing local sports industry.
After getting the investment, Junaid Akhter, Co-Founder of SportSkot said in his talk with TechJuice,
Waqas, our investor, was initially our client. He has super marts in Scotland where our products were being sold. After seeing the quality of our products, he contacted us for mass production and manufacturing of footballs and rugby balls. This is when he showed interest in playing a major role in the future of our startup and offered us investment.
This investment will certainly gonna help the startup to grow and achieve more milestones. Congratulations to SportSkot and its team!
