Punjab Government to award solar panels to School students under Ujala Program 2015

Punjab Government is ready to carry out the third phase of its Ujala Program for the year 2015. Free solar panels will be awarded to 1 lac bright and intelligent students of Govt. schools under this phase.

During the first phase of Ujala Program, a total of 2 lac and 10 thousand solar panels were distributed. 88 thousand solar panels were awarded during the 2nd phase. Punjab Govt. has modified the eligibility criteria for awarding of free solar panels this year. Now, all the students will 60% or above marks will be getting the solar panels. Previously, the required percentage was 80%. The govt. has already bought the panels from Huawei, a Chinese company. The distribution of solar panels under Ujala Program 2015 will begin this month.

The 30-watt solar panel can run two energy savers and one DC fan. Due to never-ending electricity load shedding, the solar panel can be a great benefit for the students. They can continue their studies during the hours of electricity outage. Punjab Government under the Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is taking steps to eliminate the electricity crisis from the province. The Ujala Program is one of such measure.

Other than that, Punjab Government is also in plans to offer free solar lamps to the general public. A proposal to install solar panels at water filtration plants has also been approved. Many of the street lights in Lahore has already been shifted to the modern technology.

These measures will definitely help in reducing electricity shortage. Hope, we can see long term measures in this regard too.
