PSL tunes in huge number of TV viewers

The first edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) was concluded on 23rd February 2016. The final match was played between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators, with United coming triumph. All these matches of the league were hosted in Dubai and Sharjah. PSL proves to be a great hit catching the attention of millions of cricket fans across the globe.

From local Pakistani sites to large cricket magazines including CricketTracker, ESPNcricinfo and others all highlighted the stories from PSL in main sections on their magazines and sites. The league was broadcasted live online on YouTube and YouTube offered live streaming for only Pakistani users. During the final match, the number of viewers streaming the match reached over 1 lac. offered streaming to international users with cricket fans from India, UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Bangladesh tuning in for thrilling encounters.

PSL found to be a big hit for TV channels broadcasting the event. Prime TV, a New Zealand channel, witnessed a huge ratings boost with the launch of Pakistan Super League. Similarly, PTV viewing figures have been higher than those for the 2015 World Cup. 55 percent of Pakistan’s TV audience was tuning into the tournament at peak times. It means nearly 65 million people were watching the PSL during peak periods.

Here is what PSL chairman Najam Sethi has to say regarding the success of the tournament:

Big businesses have bought the franchises, millions of people have tuned in even though the matches aren’t in Pakistan, and our own young cricketers are getting a chance to rub shoulders with giants.

This is the most extraordinary moment for Pakistani cricket since we were exiled from the international game.

Indeed, this is a remarkable start for Pakistan Super League! There is more to look forward to. Hopefully, it will transform into one of the biggest T20 leagues.
