PEMRA bans Analog TV services in Sindh from 1st Jan 2016

PEMRA has recently issued an order to cable operators in Sindh to stop Analog TV services starting 1st Jan 2016. The notification has surprised all the residents of Sindh. Every household in Sindh province will now be required to buy a Rs. 5,000 digital device to watch Cable TV.

It means after the deadline, only those having digital set-top boxes will be able to avail cable TV services in Sindh. These boxes can be purchased from all cable operators across Sindh. PEMRA has sent official notices to cable operators from Sindh asking them to shift their customers to digital set-top boxes.

The timing of this notification has made this controversial. PEMRA has just given less than a month to cable operators to upgrade their old analog system. Apart from this, this will also end cheap and economical source of entertainment. Now, Sindhi people will have to pay Rs. 5,000 or more to enjoy cable TV services.

Moreover, this notification is issued to only one province i.e. Sindh. This will certainly lead to viewers in the province. There is no details on such notification for other provinces.

Is it another scam? Or is it an effort to control content by government? Stay tuned to get more updates on this story.
