We all know that PEMRA is now regularizing DTH licenses in Pakistan. The authority is in efforts to put a full stop to illegal and unofficial DTH operations in Pakistan. These illegal DTH operations with over 3 million subscribers are causing the federal government a massive loss of around Rs. 3 billion on monthly basis. Therefore, PEMRA has now decided to take things under control. Recently, some reports have unveiled the possible monopoly of Indian TATA Group in Pakistan over acquiring DTH license.
The TATA Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai. The group is already having illegal DTH services in Pakistan. Now, it is all set to purchase a legal DTH license in Pakistan through a front company. Son of CM Punjab Shahbaz Shareef, has assured the TATA Group for provision of license as claimed by senior anchor Dr. Shahid Masood.
The operations of DTH service in Pakistan will be managed by the front company. While all investment returns and other business functions will be controlled by the TATA Group. If this is true then Indian TATA Group is in effort to hijack DTH auction in Pakistan. Since the TATA Group is one of the largest hence it will completely dominate the sector in Pakistan destroying local companies.
The matter to auction DTH licenses in Pakistan first emerged more than a decade ago in 2003. China, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are already having a fully effective and functional DTH distribution channel. The legal DTH services in Pakistan will also help PEMRA to ensure check and balance on media content of TV channels.
Let’s see how this story further unfolds. There is still no official comment on these rumors yet.
